Our Journalism Placements in India

Print Journalism with the Sivakasi Times
All our journalism volunteers in India work for the “Sivakasi Times.” This monthly magazine was set up by Projects Abroad in 2002 in collaboration with the local business community and is the first ever English language publication ever produced in or around Sivakasi, a town of 80,000 known for its printing presses and fireworks.

The magazine is run by our volunteers along with a professional Indian editor. Volunteers are responsible for writing the majority of the articles, and they can also get involved with the editing, photography, layouts and printing.

The magazine is published entirely in English. It is targeted at people involved in industry, education and public services in and around Sivakasi. Its purpose is to provide the people of Sivakasi with knowledge of their environment and society, and in doing so giving them the chance to better their English skills.

The articles in the “Sivakasi Times” follow a different theme each month and also cover aspects of life in the town. Previous themes include the problems of water-supply and environmental controversies, women's issues, health care, education and sports. It also covers things such as Sivakasi's famous fireworks and printing, farming and public services, entertainment such as reviews of Bollywood films and information about festivals and cultural events.

A typical day for a volunteer is as follows: Volunteers are expected to arrive at 9:00 a.m. Work includes researching in the office, writing up articles, editing, printing, and going out for interviews and photo sessions. There is a 2-hour lunch break which can be taken when desired. The office closes at seven in the evening.

This placement is ideal if you want to get involved in all levels of the community. You could be interviewing local politicians, local farmers, local cricketers, rickshaw drivers, local artists or simply observing the locals.  Everyone has a story in India.
